How to save a shrunken cashmere sweater?

récupérer un pull en cachemire rétréci facilement

Who doesn’t have a favorite cashmere sweater? And as much as we love it to pieces and take the utmost care of it, we are never completely safe from an accidental tumble in the dryer or a misplaced washing machine setting. And just like that, disaster strikes! Your beloved garment shrinks to the size of a doll’s outfit. But don't panic, we have the solution to save your shrunken cashmere sweater! With a little gentleness and our top tips, you will bring back all of its beauty. And, promise, it is much simpler and easier than you think.

No time to read? Here are the essentials in 3 quick points

  • Keep calm.
Check if the fabric is still a knit (you can still save it) or if it has turned into a dense, smooth felt (in which case, it's a bit more complicated).

  • Adopt the magic touch.
Soak the sweater in a bath of hair conditioner, glycerin, or white vinegar. Leave it there for a short half-hour. That's it. Afterward, gently stretch the fibers out by hand.

  • Remember the golden rule going forward.
Never wring out cashmere to squeeze the water out, and never hang it on a coat hanger. Always dry it flat, far away from any radiator and never in direct sunlight. This is the key to avoiding having to do this all over again!

Assessing the damage is the first step toward the solution

First of all, take the time to observe the sweater: is it truly lost? Two things matter most.

First, the degree of shrinkage: if the sweater has lost between 10% and 20% of its size, it is completely salvageable! Next, look closely at the knit against the light. If you can still see the tiny loops of the weave, all hope is not lost.

On the other hand, if the surface has become completely smooth, compact, and felt-like, it means the fibers have fused together due to the heat. In this case, it is unfortunately almost impossible to reverse the process (sorry…). But if it's just a classic case of shrinkage, it's time to take action!

Three foolproof methods to recover a shrunken cashmere sweater

Time for the big soak! Here are simple, cost-effective, and highly accessible methods, even if this is your very first time trying them.

The hair conditioner bath

This is the gentlest and most popular method. Why does it work? Because hair conditioner lubricates the keratin fibers of cashmere, exactly the same way it does for human hair. This allows the stitches to relax gently without harshing the precious material.

➡️ Step-by-step instructions

In a basin of lukewarm water (never hot!), dissolve 2 to 3 tablespoons of a gentle hair conditioner, preferably sulfate-free (baby conditioner works wonders here).

Submerge the sweater and let it soak for 30 to 60 minutes. This is relaxation time. No need to touch or scrub the sweater; the fibers will soften up all on their own. Afterward, gently stretch the garment in every direction (length, width, sleeves) while keeping it submerged in the water.

Rinse it thoroughly with lukewarm water, press it gently between your hands (do not wring it!), roll it inside a dry towel to absorb the excess water, and finally, lay it out flat on a clean surface while adjusting its shape back to normal.

And you're all set! You have just saved your cashmere sweater.

The glycerin bath

If the knit is really tight or if the shrinkage is quite significant, the glycerin bath is your secret weapon for the most stubborn cases. Why? Because it penetrates deep into the core of the fiber to soften it from within.

➡️ Step-by-step instructions

In a basin of lukewarm water, add about 3 to 4 tablespoons of liquid glycerin (easily found at your local pharmacy or drugstore).

Immerse the sweater and let it soak for anywhere between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on how severely it has shrunk. Just like with the conditioner method, gently reshape and stretch the garment in all directions afterward.

A delicate rinse with lukewarm water is necessary here to prevent the fabric from feeling sticky, as demonstrated in this video tutorial.

Then, gently squeeze the garment, wrap it inside a dry towel, and lay it out flat to dry while adjusting its lines.

Well done! You have just given your cashmere a brand new lease on life.

The white vinegar bath

This natural and budget-friendly trick leverages the mild acidity of vinegar to relax the fibers. It's an old-school grandmother's classic that works every single time!

➡️ Step-by-step instructions

Mix about 1 glass (200 ml) of white vinegar per liter of cold or slightly lukewarm water, then submerge the sweater and let it soak for 20 to 30 minutes. Take time to occasionally and gently stretch the tightest areas (usually around the cuffs or armholes).

Rinse the garment with lukewarm water to neutralize the smell (which will completely vanish once it dries). Follow up with the drying routine: press the sweater without twisting it, roll it inside a dry towel to draw out excess moisture, and lay it flat while guiding it back to its original shape.

And that's all there is to it!

👌 Charlotte’s Top Tip: Drying your cashmere flat ensures you do not distort the lines of the garment, which becomes very heavy when soaked with water. A clothes hanger would only stretch it out unevenly.

The little secret that changes everything: steam

To make sure the results last over time, it is vital to finish the process with a shot of steam. This is the stage that "sets" the new shape. How do you do it? Simply dampen a clean white towel, place it delicately over the cashmere, and pass your steam iron *above* it (without pressing down, and without lingering too long). Afterward, wait for the garment to cool down completely before handling it.

And what if, after trying all of this, nothing changes? Save-Our-Sweater dry cleaners! Yes, your best bet is to hand your precious piece over to a dry cleaning service specialized in cashmere. They use controlled moisture relaxation techniques that can sometimes work miracles when DIY just isn’t enough.

Frequently asked questions about shrunken cashmere

  • My sweater shrank in the dryer, can it be saved?
Yes, provided the shrinkage is moderate and the fabric has not completely felted. The hair conditioner method often delivers great results in rehydrating the fibers.

  • Can I use a hair mask instead of hair conditioner?
Yes, absolutely! Hair masks contain deep conditioning agents and silicones that lubricate the keratin fibers of cashmere, just like they do for your hair. The key is to select a gentle mask that is free from harsh sulfates or aggressive dyes.

  • Is felted cashmere permanently ruined?
Not necessarily, but it will be almost impossible to rescue using DIY methods. It is best to take it to a specialized dry cleaner who might be able to improve the texture or slightly loosen the knit. However, you have to face the facts: cashmere often loses some of its original softness and rarely returns to its absolute pristine state once completely felted.

  • How should I take care of my cashmere?
There are a few straightforward rules shared by Charlotte, the founder of Linnea Lund, which you can read all about in our complete cashmere care guide right here. To sum it up: wash at low temperatures, by hand or on a delicate cycle, never use a dryer, and always dry flat.
